Notes to My Future Self - Need
I have been thinking a lot about need lately and how it is such a powerful driver of words, actions, and behavior. If one is not careful it can be all consuming and become one’s main focus. If this happens then it can lead to desperation. You should never make decisions out of desperation. Decisions born out of desperation don’t normally have the desired outcome.
Why is that?
It is about one’s focus, which need, and even worse desperation can consume. Focus is best illustrated by the simple act of taking a photo with a camera (not talking about a camera phone). Taking a quality picture requires making the target clear, which requires attention excluding everything else. The object of the photo is clear, but everything is out of focus or blurry.
Need is like the subject of the photograph in one’s life. You want he need to be met so you focus on it. The problem is that focusing on the need will not cause it to be met. In this case it is all the periphery that will allow the need to be met. Yet, if the periphery is out of focus, then you can’t see clearly because it is blurry causing the need to go unmet. The need won’t provide for itself, something else will.
When there is a need, you can’t focus on it because you will not be able to see what can eventually meet that need. What can meet the need?
Opportunities
You can’t recognize opportunities if you are focused on the need. Instead, prepare for the opportunities, so when they are recognized, you can act and meet the need.
